Embarking on a DIY painting project can be both exciting and rewarding. However, even the most enthusiastic DIYers can stumble upon common pitfalls that can turn a fun project into a frustrating experience.
To help you achieve a professional-looking finish, here are five frequent painting mistakes and how to avoid them.
1. Skipping Surface Preparation
The Main Mistake:
Diving straight into painting without properly preparing the surface can lead to poor adhesion, uneven coverage, and a finish that doesn't last.
The Fix:
Proper preparation is key. Start by cleaning the walls to remove dust, grease, and dirt, if you want to go the extra mile, sand those walls down first. Fill any cracks or holes with filler, and sand the surface to ensure it's smooth again. For any airline cracks you can apply a slither of caulk too.
Applying a primer is essential on bare wood, otherwise the paint will just peel off, the same goes for freshly plastered ceilings/walls, to create a uniform base for your paint. Not only does this allow the top coats to adhere better, but it helps prevents future peeling, cracking or peeling paint in the future.
2. Using Low-Quality Tools
The Mistake:
Opting for cheap brushes and rollers might seem budget-friendly, but they can result in brush marks, shedding bristles, speckled and an uneven finishes.
The Fix:
Invest in high-quality painting tools, they're not actually that expensive for a half decent brush and roller either. Generally speaking, good brushes and rollers provide better coverage and a smoother finish, making your efforts worthwhile. Remember, the right tools can make a significant difference in the outcome of your project.
3. Painting in Poor Lighting
The Mistake:
Painting in dimly lit areas can cause you to miss spots, leading to patchy and uneven coverage.
The Fix:
Ensure the room is well-lit before you begin painting. Natural daylight is perfect, but if that's not possible, use bright artificial lighting to illuminate your room. This will help you see the true colour of the paint and ensure even application. Having said that, test it out, I find generally the natural light is better regardless, sometimes having the light on makes it harder to see where you've been.
4. Overloading the Brush or Roller
The Mistake:
Dipping the brush or roller too deeply into the paint can cause drips, uneven application (roller lines), and wastage.
The Fix:
Dip your brush about a third of the way into the paint and tap on the sides of the tin/skuttle to remove any excess.
For rollers, a slightly damp roller will not only help load your paint on to your roller quicker and better, when you're rolling your walls, it'll cover more area.
But, make sure before each time you roll the walls/ceilings that you roll off excess paint on the tray/skuttle before applying it to the wall. Applying multiple thin coats will achieve a smoother and more durable finish than one thick coat that looks more like orange peel 😱
5. Removing Painter's Tape Incorrectly
The Mistake:
Peeling off painter's tape too quickly or at the wrong angle can damage the paint, leading to uneven edges and a messy finish.
The Fix:
Now personally I'm not a fan of tape, but there is a time and place for it. When you do use it, make sure you remove the tape slowly and at a 45-degree angle while the paint is still slightly damp. This technique helps achieve clean lines and prevents the paint from peeling.
